Ann AguirreWe stand a professional distance apart, as if I can’t feel his pain screaming in my head. Mine amplifies his; they share a joint sound–that of glass breaking–until they swell to a crescendo that deafens.
About This Quote
In this quote from the movie, Boys Don’t Cry, Brandon Teena is talking about his friend, John Lotter. Both of them are transgendered and they are both victims of a hate crime. In this scene, Brandon is at a party celebrating John’s birthday. At the party, Brandon’s mother calls him and tells him that John has been beaten up by a group of men.
When he listens to the call, he hears his own screams as well as those of his friend. The sound of breaking glass makes the third person in the room hear something else. The idea of sharing a joint sound is symbolic of the connection these two have.
They are so close together that they can feel each other’s pain and see each other’s scars.
